Function
The respitorty system is responsible for the oxygen exchange. The main function of the respitory system is to supply the blood with oxygen. The blood needs to have oxygen in order to get oxygen to the other parts of your body. Another function is to remove carbon dioxide which is waste from your blood by exhaling it.
Parts of the respiratory system
Nose: The organ where air is inhaled and exhaled. The vestibule in the nostril's are lined with coarse hair that filters and humidifies the air.
Pharanx: The tubular part of the system that allows the passage of air to the lungs. It connects the upper portion of the throat witht eh nasal cavity and it opens into the esophagus and larynx. It carries both food and air. The epiglottis is a small flam of tissue that covers the air only passage when we swallow food to keep food from going into our lungs.
Larynx: The larynx is made up of cartilage and one of its functions is to produce your voice. It contains a pair of vocal cords which vibrate to ake sounds.
Treachea: The trachea is also called the windpipe. It filters the air we inhale and then branches to the bronchi. It is made of muscle and elastic fibers with rings of cartilage. The trachea is lined with cilia which sweep fluids and other particles out of the airway so that they do not go to the lungs.
Lungs: The lungs are spongy structures where gas exchange takes place. Within the lungs are bronchi branched into smaller bronchi and even smaller tubes such as bronchioles. The exchange takes place on tiny air sacs on the alveoli which is at the end of bronchioles.
